CLARENCE "C.R" HORN, 88, of Elk, passed away Jan. 16,
2012, in Waco, TX, with military graveside rites held
at Gerald Cemetery near Leroy.
Mr. Horn was born Dec. 25, 1923, in Ranger, TX the fifth
of nine children born to Harmon Lafayette and Sarah
Lucretia (Casey) Horn Jr. He grew up in Ranger and was
an all-district football player for Ranger High School
Class of 1942. He served his country with the U.S.
Army during World War II as a tank gunner participating
in several battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.
C.R. was a 1950 graduate of Texas Tech University. in
February of 1978, he was united in marriage to Ernestine
Carolyn Lee in Lubbock.
C.R. was the owner of Horn Manufactured Homes for over
50 years before retiring in 2009. He was known for his
fair business practices, willingness to help anyone in
need and was a champion of the underdog. C.R. enjoyed
working, being outdoors and farming. He especially loved
spending time with his family and preparing for egg hunts
at Easter time. He was also a caring father figure to
many including Marilyn, Sean, Marsha and Mikala.
C.R. was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers,
Buchanan "Buck" Horn, Herman Horn, Tant Horn, Roy Horn
and infant Billy Horn; and a sister, Anna Dale Gibbs
(RHS-1932).
Survivors include his beloved wife of 34 years, Carolyn
(Lee) Horn; four sons, Timothy Horn and wife, Kay, of
Austin, Tyron Horn of Dallas, Paul "David" Horn of
Arlington, and Dalton Williams of Amarillo; a daughter,
Tanna Lazaroff of Little Elm; two sisters, Betty Horn
Foster (RHS-1945) of Elk, and Lucretia Brown & husband,
Len, of Hillsboro; 15 grandchildren; and many precious
nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
BROTHER: J.B. "BUCK" HORN, died on Nov. 20, 2001, with
interment in the Gerald Cemetery.
Mr. Horn was born on Nov. 23, 1915 in Roscoe, TX, to
Harmon & Sarah Horn. He grew up in Ranger, TX, until he
enlisted in the U.S. Army during WW II where he served in
the Western Pacific. He was awarded the American Defense
Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific
Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star. After his service to
his country, he married Joyce Schrank in December of 1961.
He worked as a barber for most of his life as well as for
General Tire for 26 years. He was taught to play the violin
by his father and enjoyed playing the fiddle for his family
and friends. Buck will always be remembered as a devoted
husband and loving father and grandfather. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Joyce, in 1996, his parents and his
brother, Roy Horn.
Survivors at the time of his death are his daughters,
Jacqueline Uptmore and husband, John, of West and Jennifer
Horn of Axtell; grandchildren, Buchanan, Kyle, Lorelei
Uptmore; sisters, Anna Dale Gibbs (RHS-1932), Betty Foster
(RHS-1945), Lucretia Brown & husband, Len; brothers and
sisters-in-law, Herman & Adeline Horn, Tant and Clara
Horn and Clarence (RHS-1942) and Carolyn Horn; several
nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews as well as
many other family and friends who loved him and will
miss him greatly.
